Today we deployed our Baited Underwater Remote Video Surveys (BRUVS). Through this non-invasive technique we get an idea of the community assemblages, distribution and abundance of the different animals that roam the area. Here is a video showing our past highlights! The secret to staying motivated when you’re a marine biologist…. Focus on the highlights! Not every day at the Shark Lab is spent tagging or swimming with sharks, and there is a LOT of work that goes into keeping this place running (for 34 years no less!!) So when we’re writing grants at our computers, repairing a finicky boat engine in the hot sun, or cleaning out a bait freezer, we focus on the INCREDIBLE things we get to see and do which wouldn’t be possible without all of the not-so-glamorou

Gaia is one of the Great Hammerheads (S. mokarran) that returns to Bimini year after year. Seeing her makes all of us at the lab happy because we know she is doing well! If you look closely you will see fish swimming alongside her. These typically are Carangiformes, which include Cobia (R. canadum), Jacks (Carangoides spp. and Caranx spp.), and Shark Suckers (E. naucrates). These fish swim with larger predators to use them as cover for their desired prey such as small baitfish. The sharks usuall

Searching through the Seagrass. Serving as one of the most valuable seafood exports in The Bahamas, Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) can be found as shallow as 1 m and as deep as 90 m throughout the coasts of the Caribbean Islands and Northeastern South America, often sheltered among coral reefs, shelfs, and seagrass beds. At night, they leave their shelters to forage, and while they aren’t picky, they can be found eating small crustaceans like snails and crabs. As an important habitat,

A sharky welcome for our June Teacher & Educator Scholars! This week we are joined by 14 Educators from all across Canada, the US and The Bahamas! They’ll be taking a crash course in shark biology, evolution, ecology and much more while also getting into the field to see wild sharks and rays up close! Then they’ll bring their experiences back into their classrooms and help to inspire the next generation of marine (and shark!) conservationists! Huge thank you to @oceanmokum and @saveourseasfounda

From Seagrass to the World!! This newborn Nurse Shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) was born in the seagrass bed. After emerging from its egg casing and seeing the world for the first time. Its inherent knowledge to swim has begun. Most juveniles will tend to spend their time in the shallow waters hidden from predators. Rock Ledges and corals are ideal places for these young sharks to grow while being protected. If you look closely you can see colored spots . Nurse Sharks lose these spots within mont

In my experience, baby tiger sharks are very curious and this bebe was no exception. We were probably the first humans she’s ever seen, and she did a couple of close inspections before nipping off into the blue! Interactions Between Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella frontalis) and Anthropogenic Marine Debris Here in Bimini, we are lucky to have close encounters with species like Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella frontalis). Thankfully, not all encounters look like this. Here we see the Atlantic spotted dolphins “playing” with a discarded plastic water bottle. Human plastic consumption is inherently tied to the disruption of marine ecosystems and wildlife. This moment, captured by @wadewithwyatt , is

The Bimini Boa, one of the most amazing attributes of the snake is its large adult size, reaching lengths of over eight feet. Once abundant on all the Bimini Islands, the population have evidently been reduced by human persecution, illegal collection and development. Former Sharklaber Grant Johnson recently visited the lab and brought a Boa he found during his stay, we scanned and discovered that she was previously PIT tagged. We hope with care and education the Bimini Boa population will recove

Have you ever wondered how the Lemon Shark got its name? Our current group of visiting Teachers/Educators had an amazing time seeing Lemon Sharks swimming over the sand flats. The crystal clear waters of Bimini make it very easy to observe these sharks in their natural environments. The Lemon Shark is named for its yellowish colouration (hence the “Lemon”! 🍋). Interestingly, this characteristic is not the best for identifying these sharks. Lemon Sharks can have a ton of variation in their colou

This Predator is not always at the top! Although Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) are highly mobile within shallow waters and effective predators for many teleost and smaller elasmobranch species. They still need to be aware for larger predators, even in the shallows. Some larger coastal sharks like Great Hammerheads (Sphyrna mokarran) have been seen predating upon these sharks. The shallow flats and channels are where Blacktip sharks hunt but if they are not careful they can become the h

An evolutionary masterpiece! Countershading on sharks is an evolutionary trait that helps sharks camouflage. With a darker dorsal and lighter ventral side sharks such as this Caribbean Reef Shark (Carcharhinus perezi) is able to blend in with the shadows of the deeper water, but also breaking up its silhouette from below. Countershading helps with both predator avoidance as well as stalking their prey. Have you ever seen a sharks countershading?? _____________________________________ 📸: @wadewi

Say hello to the Caribbean Reef Shark (Carcharhinus perezi)! Found throughout the Gulf and the Caribbean Sea, the Caribbean Reef Shark is a familiar face in Bimini. They can often be found cruising through coral reef habitats in shallow, nearshore waters, but can sometimes be found in waters more than 300 meters deep. Although Caribbean Reef Sharks are primarily solitary animals, they can sometimes be found in aggregations where prey is abundant. Unlike other reef shark species, the Caribbean Re

"What’s that on her back? A boat injury? A cut made worse by remora? No one knows! Swimming with Spotted Eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) is an activity that the Shark Lab team enjoys. My first time swimming with these graceful gliders was here in Bimini, and it has easily become something I will never get tired of! These eagle rays, unlike the Southern Stingray (H. americanus), have a shoveled snout which allows them to dig into the sand to sift out and capture their prey. While the Eagle Rays are hunting through the sand, they also need to watch out for predators which are of

Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming the 11th graders from Louise McDonald High School to the Lab! 🦈 It was great to engage with local students and get to share our work with them. Spending a day at the station meant getting to know the crew, sitting in on a lecture, picking up trash at the beach and a whole lot of laughter. Special thanks to @rocktheocean for making this possible. And to @dominique_b for collaboating with us! _____________________________________ 📸: @maddalena.polla #re

Baby sharks?! Sharks have some of the most diverse reproductive modes of the entire animal kingdom. During a dive last week, a female nurse sharks swam through that looked visibly pregnant. Nurse sharks have a reproductive mode called yolk-sac viviparity meaning their pups are retained within internal egg cases. The mothers will shed the egg cases first and then proceed to give live birth to their pups after. 📸: Baylie Fadool #shark #babyshark #research #education #conservation #bimini #bahamas
